Can I Install A Roller Shutter Myself?

Can I install a roller shutter myself?

There are a few companies that will supply roller shutter kits to non-trade and this post is here to help point out a few of the pitfalls involved in the correct installation of a roller shutter from start to finish.

What Do I Get?

Firstly you will need to make sure you get the right kit. It’s great to understand the options available across the whole market to make sure you are getting the right product for your home. Security, insulation, home automation, weather proofing, over rides, safety, canpoys, key fobs, control panels are just to mention a few.

What are the legal safety requirments for having an automatic closing shutter?

If the kits are very cheap there will be a compromise on components used, not present or the manufacturing process.

The Space

Then there is the site. Where is the roller shutter being installed, what’s it being secured to and how is it going to be fixed? How many fixings and where? Are you confident with your measurements? Power requirements? Weather elements? Obstructions?

Are there any options with the installation type that would be more functional and / or ascetically pleasing?

The Installation

The install….. roller shutters need to be fixed very, very straight and secure to avoid problems further down the line. Furthermore kits have different fixings and installation requirements. Where does it need to be fixed and how many fixings?

Can I install this kit safely and properly on my own?

Even if you are confident with all of the above and the manufacturer supplies a set of fitting instructions, warranties may still be void if problems are encountered further down the line. Check with the individual manufacturer and make sure you know your options and rights.

If the motor stops working after a year, then the manufacturer is going to want proof the shutter has been installed correctly, and has not been putting strain on the motor.

Summary

It took me a while to learn, not just how to survey a site but how to install a roller shutter correctly. And even then, there are different kits out there that need slightly different attention to detail. Personally if I was going to spend out the money on a roller shutter kit, I’d want it to last, and be covered by a decent warranty. Even if I was DIY competent and I had a few tips from a roller shutter installer I’d still be wary about fitting one myself.

Be careful and be warned… and do get in touch with any questions that I may be able to help with.
